New international airport in Marrakech: A strategic project for the future
Morocco is advancing its ambition to modernize airport infrastructure with the announcement of a new international airport in Marrakech. This initiative is part of the strategic plan "Airports 2030," aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the growing tourism sector and preparing for the 2030 World Cup.
Currently, Marrakech-Ménara Airport, which accommodates both international and domestic flights, will soon be designated exclusively for domestic flights and private jets. The new international airport will be situated in the Sidi Zouine area, conveniently located near the Marrakech-Agadir highway and the road to Chichaoua. This strategic location will enhance access for travelers and improve air traffic flow.
With an estimated capacity of 14 million passengers per year, this airport will alleviate the current constraints faced by Marrakech-Ménara, which struggles to manage the increasing influx of tourists. Marrakech, as one of the kingdom's primary tourist destinations, necessitated an infrastructure that matches its economic and tourism dynamism.
The future airport will be directly connected to the high-speed train network, ensuring a swift and efficient connection to other major cities in the country. To facilitate this, two train stations will be constructed: one in front of the Grand Stadium of Marrakech and the other near the international airport. This synergy between air and rail transport represents a significant advancement for mobility development in Morocco.
This new airport exemplifies Morocco's commitment to enhancing its attractiveness and competitiveness on the international stage. In addition to improving airport service quality, it will foster job creation and stimulate investments in the Marrakech region.
Adil Fakir, Director General of the National Airports Office (ONDA), recently presented the "Airports 2030" plan, which aims to modernize existing infrastructure and align it with international standards. This ambitious program marks a new era for Moroccan air transport and reaffirms the country’s strategic role as a regional hub.
With this project, Marrakech is poised to take a significant leap in its development, further solidifying its position as an essential city for tourism and business.
