Italy's Meloni appoints new tourism minister after referendum defeat
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appointed Gianmarco Mazzi as the new tourism minister on Friday, following her government’s setback in a recent judicial reform referendum. Mazzi, previously the culture undersecretary, succeeds Daniela Santanchè, who resigned amid ongoing legal proceedings related to a publishing company she once owned.
Mazzi, a former television and entertainment executive, brings experience from the cultural sector that Meloni described as beneficial for Italy’s tourism and cultural development. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the presence of President Sergio Mattarella, and Meloni highlighted Mazzi’s qualifications in a social media post.
The cabinet reshuffle comes as Meloni seeks to consolidate control over her government after the referendum defeat, removing officials linked to scandals. Two senior figures from the justice ministry also stepped down in recent days, reflecting broader efforts to stabilize the administration ahead of upcoming political challenges.
