Kuwait reports attacks as refinery and power facility hit
Kuwait said on Friday that it had come under missile and drone attacks, as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East. The announcement comes more than a month into a regional conflict that has increasingly drawn in Gulf countries.
According to official statements, Kuwaiti air defenses intercepted several incoming threats overnight. Authorities noted that explosions heard in different parts of the country were linked to these interception operations rather than direct impacts.
Later in the day, the national news agency reported that a drone strike targeted the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, one of the country’s key oil facilities. The attack caused fires in multiple operational units, prompting emergency response teams to intervene quickly. Officials confirmed that no casualties were reported.
The state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation stated that the situation at the refinery was brought under control, although the extent of material damage is still being assessed. The facility plays a strategic role in Kuwait’s energy production and export capacity.
In a separate development, the government announced that a power generation and water desalination plant was also hit in what it described as an Iranian attack. The strike caused material damage, but authorities said there was no immediate disruption to electricity or water supply services.
Observers note that despite the attacks on critical infrastructure, essential services have continued to operate normally. However, the incidents highlight growing concerns about the vulnerability of energy facilities in the Gulf region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
