Trump Sues Pollster and Newspaper for Election Interference
Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against a prominent pollster and a major newspaper in Iowa, accusing them of interference in the 2020 election. The legal action targets Ann Selzer, the pollster behind a pre-election survey, and the Des Moines Register newspaper, along with its parent company.
The lawsuit stems from a poll conducted by Selzer, which showed Trump trailing Democratic candidate Kamala Harris by three points in Iowa, a state he had won by significant margins in the previous two presidential elections. Published shortly before the November election, the poll had led to increased Democratic optimism, despite other surveys suggesting a tight race.
Trump went on to secure a commanding 13-point victory in Iowa, causing damage to the credibility of Selzer's poll. In his lawsuit, Trump accuses Selzer and the other defendants of "brazen election interference," seeking unspecified damages under Iowa's "unfair practices" law. He claims the poll was "nothing more than a work of fantasy" designed to mislead the electorate.
The Des Moines Register has stood by its reporting, acknowledging that the poll did not reflect the final margin of Trump's victory but asserting that the survey's methodology was transparent. The newspaper emphasized that Selzer had provided a technical explanation of the poll’s results.
Rights groups, however, have criticized the lawsuit, with some arguing that it forms part of a broader strategy by Trump to silence the press. The Knight First Amendment Institute, dedicated to defending free speech, described the lawsuit as an attempt to curtail media coverage of critical issues. Legal experts, including Rick Hasen, a professor of law at the University of California, believe the lawsuit is unlikely to succeed due to strong First Amendment protections in the U.S.
This lawsuit comes on the heels of another legal settlement in which Trump settled defamation claims against ABC News, receiving a $15 million payment and additional funds for legal expenses. Trump has long criticized the media, calling the press "corrupt" and "bloodsuckers," and has indicated he plans to pursue further legal action against other media outlets, including CBS News.
