Morocco’s Prince Moulay Rachid Represents King at Reopening Ceremony of Notre-Dame Cathedral

Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco attended the grand reopening of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on Saturday, representing King Mohammed VI. The event was a momentous occasion, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, symbolizing the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries.

The ceremony began with a film showcasing the monumental restoration efforts that spanned five years, bringing together artisans from various sectors. A tribute was paid to the workers and rescuers who contributed to saving and rebuilding the cathedral, which was devastated by a fire in 2019. The event also featured a parade of 160 firefighters, and a stirring musical performance by violinists Renaud and Gauthier Capucon. President Macron delivered a speech, expressing heartfelt gratitude to those who helped restore the cathedral to its former glory.

In a special tribute, Pope Francis delivered a message through the Apostolic Nuncio, honoring the collective effort that went into the restoration. The event underscored the significance of Notre-Dame, a Gothic masterpiece over 860 years old, and the extraordinary craftsmanship required to preserve its legacy.

The restoration of Notre-Dame mobilized hundreds of workers, including craftsmen, builders, and firefighters, all of whom played vital roles in returning the cathedral to its majestic state. The fire in 2019 had left the church in ruins, but the dedication of those involved in its restoration ensured that this historical landmark would endure for generations to come.

Prince Moulay Rachid's visit follows the recent state visit of President Macron to Morocco, during which France reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Morocco. Macron also reiterated France's support for Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara, reaffirming Paris' position on the territorial integrity of Morocco.

The reopening of Notre-Dame was not just a celebration of a restored architectural wonder but also an opportunity to highlight the enduring relationship between France and Morocco, founded on shared values, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic cooperation.
