Andres Iniesta Bids Farewell to Football After 24-Year Career
Former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 40, concluding a remarkable career that spanned over two decades and was marked by numerous accolades.
Iniesta, who played a pivotal role in both the Spanish national team and FC Barcelona during their most successful eras in the late 2000s and early 2010s, expressed his emotions during a tearful press conference. “Please allow me to be a little emotional today,” he stated. “I never thought this day would come. I never imagined it. Yes, all these tears we have shed these days are tears of emotion, of pride. They are not tears of sadness.”
Hailing from the small village of Fuentealbilla, Iniesta began his journey in football at an early age. He joined Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy at just 12 years old, eventually making 674 appearances for the club and serving as captain for three seasons. His tenure at Barcelona was nothing short of extraordinary; he won nine La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, six Copa del Rey titles, two UEFA Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups.
On the international stage, Iniesta earned 131 caps for Spain. He is perhaps best remembered for scoring the decisive goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final against the Netherlands, securing Spain's first-ever global title. His contributions were instrumental in Spain's victories in the European Championships in 2008 and 2012, where he was named player of the tournament during their successful title defense.
Iniesta's exceptional technical skills and vision on the pitch made him a key figure in Barcelona’s midfield alongside Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets. This trio thrived under the management of Pep Guardiola, leading Barcelona to become one of the most formidable teams in football history.
Following his departure from Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued his career in Japan with Vissel Kobe before moving to Emirates Club in the United Arab Emirates for his final season. Reflecting on his career, he emphasized the values of hard work and perseverance that guided him throughout his journey.
The football community has expressed an outpouring of tributes following his retirement announcement. Former teammate Lionel Messi praised Iniesta as “one of the most magical teammates” and expressed how much he would be missed.
As Iniesta steps away from professional football, his legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats is firmly established, leaving behind a rich history filled with unforgettable moments and achievements that will resonate with fans for generations to come.
