Wheat Prices Surge Amid Black Sea Tensions and Climate Risks

Grain markets were shaken on Wednesday, August 26, by a new surge in wheat futures. In Chicago, SRW wheat contracts hit their daily limit increase, in a context marked by escalating tensions around the Black Sea and persistent concerns regarding European crops.

This movement reflects the growing nervousness among operators in the face of multiple risks that could disrupt global supply. The situation in Ukraine, logistical difficulties in Black Sea ports, and extreme weather conditions in Europe are contributing to tightening market prospects.

The Black Sea at the Heart of Concerns

The geopolitical factor remains the main trigger for the spike observed this week. Attacks targeting port infrastructure and commercial vessels in the region have progressively complicated the shipment of Ukrainian and Russian grains.

According to S&P Global, Ukraine reported 67 attacks on port facilities in the month of July alone. Russian strikes against ports in the Odessa region have reportedly reduced Ukrainian grain export capacity by about one third.

This situation arises as Russia and Ukraine play a major role in global wheat trade. S&P Global estimates that the two countries together account for about 27% of the world's wheat supply. Any sustained disruption of flows from this region can quickly impact international prices.

Difficulties are not limited to Black Sea ports. Alternative routes via the Danube are also facing constraints. At the end of August, dozens of ships were waiting near the Sulina Canal, while the processing capacity of the passage had significantly decreased.

Markets React to a Global Supply Risk

The rise in wheat is not an isolated phenomenon. Corn and soybeans also rose on Wednesday, indicating that operators are factoring in a broader risk affecting agricultural availability.

For investors, the difficulty lies in the combination of several factors. A disruption of Black Sea exports comes at a time when some producing regions are facing particularly unfavorable weather conditions. The market must thus contend simultaneously with geopolitical, logistical, and climatic risks.

Tensions on trade routes can also lead to increased transport costs and alter export routes. In Ukraine, Black Sea ports remain essential for agricultural exports, making their operation particularly strategic for both producers and international buyers.

Europe Facing New Crop Degradation

Concerns about supply are also fueled by the agricultural situation in Europe. In its latest MARS bulletin, published at the end of August, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre reported a significant degradation of prospects for summer crops due to persistent heat and exceptional water deficits.

Yield forecasts for all summer crops in the European Union have been lowered to 14% below the average of the past five years. Corn and other summer crops are particularly exposed, especially in several regions of France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

The phenomenon is even more concerning as high temperatures and lack of water have affected critical stages of plant development, notably flowering, biomass formation, and grain filling. In some particularly affected areas, severe losses, or even local harvest failures, are now possible.

However, the picture is more nuanced for winter cereals. The JRC indicates that their yields should generally be around the five-year average at the European level, with harvests largely completed.

Volatility Expected to Last

The dramatic reaction of futures contracts primarily illustrates the current sensitivity of markets to news that could alter supply outlooks. When exports from a major grain region are threatened, operators can quickly factor in a risk premium into prices.

The market remains particularly attentive to the evolution of the war in Ukraine, the functioning of port infrastructures, and the capacity of alternative routes to absorb volumes that can no longer transit normally through the main ports.

European weather conditions represent a second factor to monitor. Even if temperatures are expected to gradually ease in some regions, the JRC estimates that the expected improvement in conditions may come too late to compensate for the damage already recorded on summer crops.

In the short term, the combination of these factors is likely to maintain high volatility in the markets for wheat, corn, and other major grains. For importing countries, the issue now goes beyond just the evolution of financial markets: the stability of trade routes and the ability of major producers to ensure their exports become major issues for global food security.
