Morocco-US Defense Partnership Advances With New Apache Helicopter Delivery
Morocco has received six additional AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, marking another milestone in the modernization of the Royal Moroccan Air Force and the strengthening of defense ties with the United States.
The delivery was commemorated on October 26, 2026, during a ceremony at the First Royal Air Force Base in Salé, near Rabat-Salé International Airport. Senior Moroccan military officials attended alongside Major General Matthew W. Brown, commander of the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa.
With the latest delivery, Morocco's Apache fleet has reached 19 aircraft out of the 24 covered by a military sales agreement valued at nearly $1.3 billion. The acquisition forms part of a broader effort to upgrade the country's military capabilities and enhance operational readiness.
A Strategic Investment in Military Modernization
The AH-64E Apache is designed for attack and reconnaissance missions, combining advanced battlefield capabilities with systems intended to support coordination between air and ground forces.
Morocco is among only two African countries operating Apache helicopters and is currently the only country on the continent using the AH-64E variant. The latest delivery therefore represents an important development in the country's military aviation capabilities.
Beyond the addition of new aircraft, the program includes a wider framework of cooperation between Rabat and Washington, with training and operational coordination forming key elements of the partnership.
The acquisition also reflects Morocco's continued investment in modernizing its armed forces amid evolving regional security requirements.
African Lion to Strengthen Joint Military Readiness
The new helicopters are expected to play a role in future editions of African Lion, the major multinational military exercise conducted on the African continent.
According to US military officials, Moroccan and American pilots, together with ground forces, are expected to train with the Apache platforms during upcoming exercises. The objective is to improve interoperability, coordination and the ability of both forces to conduct joint operations.
The cooperation is aligned with the 2026–2036 Defense Cooperation Roadmap, signed at the Pentagon in April 2026. The framework sets out objectives for joint readiness and closer military coordination over the coming decade.
Major General Brown described the delivery as an important step in strengthening Morocco's defense capabilities and contributing to wider regional security. He also highlighted the value Washington places on Morocco's role in security cooperation.
A Longstanding Partnership Between Rabat and Washington
The helicopter delivery adds a new dimension to a relationship that spans several centuries. Morocco recognized the independence of the United States in 1777, becoming the first country to do so, and the two nations maintain the longest-standing treaty relationship in US history.
In recent years, defense cooperation has included military training, joint exercises and the acquisition of advanced equipment. The Apache program stands out as a major component of Morocco's efforts to strengthen its air capabilities and improve coordination with international partners.
The latest delivery also underscores the importance both countries attach to sustained military cooperation and shared security objectives.
Further Deliveries Expected Under the Agreement
With 19 of the 24 contracted helicopters now delivered, Morocco has moved closer to completing the current Apache acquisition program.
The remaining aircraft will complete the planned fleet under the agreement, while joint training initiatives are expected to support the integration of the helicopters into operational service.
The program's broader impact will depend not only on the number of aircraft delivered but also on the continued development of pilot proficiency, maintenance capacity and coordination between air and ground units.
For Morocco and the United States, the latest milestone combines military modernization with a renewed commitment to defense cooperation and regional security.
