Joe Biden undergoing radiotherapy for prostate cancer

Former U.S. President Joe Biden is currently undergoing radiotherapy and hormone treatment to combat prostate cancer, according to a spokesperson quoted by AFP on Saturday.

The 82-year-old Democrat, who decided not to seek re-election in 2024 due to health concerns, revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer, with bone metastases.

At the time, his cancer was classified as grade 9 on the Gleason scale, which measures the aggressiveness of prostate cancers on a scale from 1 to 10, according to Biden’s team.

Radiotherapy “uses high-energy rays or particles to kill cancer cells,” explains the American Cancer Society, which notes that this treatment is used for various stages of prostate cancer.

Hormone therapy, meanwhile, aims to “reduce the levels of male hormones (androgens) in the body or prevent them from fueling the growth of cancer cells.”

After initially expressing his “sadness” at the news in May, Donald Trump suggested the following day that Biden’s diagnosis had been known “for a long time.” In June, the Republican billionaire ordered an inquiry into Biden’s entourage, alleging a “cover-up” of the former president’s declining physical and cognitive health.
