Cambodia’s King undergoes treatment for prostate cancer in China
Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni has announced that he is currently receiving medical treatment for prostate cancer in China, according to an official statement released by the country’s information ministry.
The 72-year-old monarch said that his condition was diagnosed following a comprehensive medical examination in Beijing. Acting on medical advice, he will extend his stay in the Chinese capital for an estimated one to three months to continue treatment.
King Sihamoni, who has reigned since 2004 after the abdication of his father Norodom Sihanouk, emphasized his gratitude for the care provided by his medical team. The Cambodian monarchy today plays a largely ceremonial role, while political power in the country has been dominated for decades by long-time former prime minister Hun Sen and his political allies.
Before ascending the throne, Sihamoni had a long career in the arts and diplomacy. He studied performing arts in Europe, worked as a dance choreographer, and later served as Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations and as a representative to UNESCO in Paris.
His diagnosis has drawn attention in Cambodia, where the monarchy remains an important symbol of national unity despite its limited political influence.
