New study shows promising results for J&J prostate cancer treatment

A new clinical study has revealed encouraging results for patients with high-risk prostate cancer, showing that a treatment regimen developed by Johnson & Johnson may significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of disease progression.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago. Researchers reported that the drug Erleada, when combined with hormone-blocking therapy before and after prostate surgery, improved the likelihood of eliminating cancer cells and lowered the risk of cancer spread or death.

According to the study, patients who received the combination treatment were substantially more likely to have little or no detectable cancer in the prostate at the time of surgery compared with those who received hormone therapy alone. Researchers noted that the difference was particularly significant among individuals diagnosed with high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer.

The trial followed participants for more than five years, allowing scientists to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of the treatment strategy. Results indicated that the combination therapy reduced the risk of disease recurrence, progression, or death, offering new hope for patients facing aggressive forms of the disease.

Medical experts attending the conference described the findings as potentially transformative for prostate cancer care. Current treatment standards for high-risk patients generally include surgery to remove the prostate, often combined with radiation therapy. The new data suggest that introducing advanced drug therapy before and after surgery may further improve patient outcomes.

Researchers also evaluated an extended treatment approach involving a full year of therapy surrounding surgery. The results support the growing interest in using targeted treatments earlier in the disease process to increase the chances of long-term cancer control.
