Spain train accident death toll rises to 41
The death toll from a serious railway accident in southern Spain has risen to 41, according to updated figures released on Tuesday by regional authorities in Andalusia and the country’s transport minister.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening when two high-speed trains collided near the town of Adamuz. Emergency services continued recovery operations into Monday night, leading to the discovery of an additional victim inside one of the train carriages.
In a statement, the Andalusian regional government confirmed that 39 people, including four children, remain hospitalized following the accident. Several of the injured are reportedly in serious condition.
Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, confirmed the revised death toll during a radio interview, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact causes of the collision.
Security forces and emergency responders remain deployed at the site, while judicial authorities have opened a formal inquiry. Rail traffic in the affected area has been disrupted as safety checks and technical assessments continue.
The accident has prompted renewed concerns about rail safety and emergency response coordination on high-speed rail networks in Spain.
