Spain rules out Morocco ending extradition cooperation
Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has dismissed the possibility of Morocco suspending its extradition agreement with Spain, stressing that judicial and security cooperation between the two countries remains strong.
Speaking during a visit to Ceuta, Grande-Marlaska referred to his previous professional experience in the judiciary and said cooperation with Morocco on extradition cases had worked effectively during that period. He indicated that the same level of coordination continues today in his role as interior minister.
The Spanish minister described cooperation with Morocco on extradition and judicial matters as exceptional, emphasizing the close relationship between the two countries across several areas. He also highlighted what he characterized as a relationship based on trust and mutual commitment.
Grande-Marlaska said he could not envisage any issue capable of seriously affecting this cooperation. His remarks come amid discussions over the effectiveness of procedures for dealing with individuals wanted by the authorities of either country.
According to Spanish media reports, the minister categorically rejected the possibility that Morocco could halt the implementation of its extradition arrangements with Spain. His comments underline Madrid’s interest in maintaining close coordination with Rabat on judicial and security matters.
The extradition framework is part of a broader network of bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Spain, particularly in areas linked to law enforcement, judicial coordination and cross-border security.
The Spanish government’s position suggests that Madrid currently expects existing mechanisms to remain operational and views continued cooperation with Morocco as an important element of bilateral relations.
