On Tuesday, May 27, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continued with significant developments. Ukraine reported that Russia launched an unprecedented number of drones overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described these attacks as evidence of Moscow’s unchecked aggression. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most of the 355 drones, but several managed to penetrate and caused casualties, including the deaths of two elderly women in the Kharkiv region.

Russia accused Ukraine of targeting its social infrastructure with drone attacks, claiming to have shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones. Russian forces reportedly took control of several villages in the Sumy region, aiming to establish a buffer zone, with residents evacuated for safety.

The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office revealed that over 600 children have been killed and nearly 2,000 wounded since the conflict began. Meanwhile, Russia’s special envoy accused Ukraine of causing hundreds of civilian casualties through harsh military tactics.

On the military aid front, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Ukraine’s Western allies have lifted restrictions on the range of weapons supplied, a move Moscow warned could be dangerous. Additionally, Ukraine confirmed reports that China is providing Russia with key military manufacturing materials.

Diplomatically, the Kremlin dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Putin, while indicating ongoing work on a Russian peace proposal. Zelenskyy condemned the ongoing drone and missile attacks as a political choice to prolong the war. French President Macron expressed skepticism about Putin’s honesty and called for firm deadlines and sanctions. Danish and Finnish leaders also highlighted Russia’s aggressive actions as evidence of its unwillingness for peace, with Finland summoning the Russian ambassador over an airspace violation.
