Africa's War on Terror: Harnessing Technological Power

In a compelling call to confront the escalating terror menace in Africa, Morocco's Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, emphasized the critical need to adopt cutting-edge technologies. His remarks were delivered during the third high-level meeting of the "Marrakech Platform," a gathering of Heads of Counterterrorism and Security Agencies in Africa, held in the historic city of Fez.

Bourita highlighted a grim reality: 60% of global terrorism victims are from sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa. He noted that the latter region experienced over 1,800 terrorist attacks in the first half of the previous year alone.

Despite these challenges, Morocco's commitment to combating terrorism remains unwavering. Bourita hailed the Marrakech Platform as a testament to Africa's determination to develop homegrown solutions. The significance of this gathering was underscored by the participation of nearly 60 delegations representing UN member states, African nations, and the continent's strategic partners, along with regional and international organizations.

Bourita praised the relentless efforts of African countries in fighting terrorism and called for a "greater focus" on leveraging emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and drones. This call to action underscores the need to equip the continent with the latest technological advancements in the fight against terror.

Recognizing the pivotal role of the UN Office of Counterterrorism, Bourita commended its partnership with various initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of African nations. Notably, the office, established in Rabat in 2021, has provided training to over 1,500 law enforcement officers from 30 African countries, highlighting Morocco's strong commitment to this cause.

As terrorism continues to pose a significant threat, Morocco has consistently reaffirmed its determination to support international efforts to combat this scourge. The kingdom's approach includes an integrated strategy that addresses the root causes of extremism and transnational crime, emphasizing shared responsibility in eradicating this collective threat.
