Syrian security officer arrested over killing of civilians

Syrian authorities have arrested a member of the internal security services suspected of killing civilians in the southern province of Suweida, a region predominantly inhabited by the Druze minority. The incident highlights the persistent instability affecting parts of the country despite recent security deployments.

According to local security officials, four civilians were shot dead and a fifth was seriously injured in the village of al-Matana. The suspect, identified as an officer affiliated with local internal security, was taken into custody shortly after the incident as part of an ongoing investigation.

The victims were reportedly carrying out agricultural work in an area under government control at the time of the attack. Rights groups have stressed that the case raises serious concerns over the conduct of security personnel and the protection of civilians in volatile regions.

Suweida remains a sensitive area following deadly clashes last year between Druze fighters and Sunni Bedouin groups, violence that later drew in government forces and allied tribes. Although authorities announced a stabilization plan supported by international partners, including the United States and Jordan, security conditions in the province remain fragile, fueling continued fears among minority communities.
