Netanyahu and Trump to discuss Iran nuclear talks in Washington

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday for talks focused on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security, according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.

The meeting comes shortly after indirect discussions between the United States and Iran were held in Oman, marking a renewed but fragile attempt to address long-standing disputes over Tehran’s nuclear activities. While Washington described the talks as constructive, they highlighted persistent disagreements over the scope and direction of any future negotiations.

Netanyahu has reiterated that any diplomatic process with Iran should go beyond nuclear enrichment and also address Tehran’s ballistic missile capabilities as well as its support for armed groups across the Middle East. Israel has long argued that these issues are central to regional stability and cannot be separated from the nuclear file.

US President Donald Trump has indicated that further talks with Iran are planned, even as his administration maintains a posture of military pressure in the region. Recent deployments of US naval forces underscore Washington’s readiness to escalate if diplomacy fails, while also seeking leverage at the negotiating table.

Iranian officials, for their part, have dismissed the impact of US military movements and reaffirmed their refusal to abandon uranium enrichment. Tehran has also insisted that its missile programme remains non-negotiable, citing deep mistrust following past confrontations and previous rounds of diplomacy.

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Netanyahu is expected to reflect close coordination between the two allies as tensions remain high, with both diplomacy and deterrence shaping the evolving balance of power in the Middle East.
