Austrian Woman Kidnapped in Niger Amid Rising Security Concerns

An Austrian woman has been kidnapped in Niger, marking the first abduction of a European citizen in the country since the military coup of 2023. The Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that its embassy in Algeria, which also covers Niger, had been notified and was in communication with local authorities.

The woman was seized in the Fada district of Agadez, located on the edge of the Sahara Desert, by unidentified attackers who forced her into a four-wheel drive. The victim, identified as Eva Gretzmacher, a 73-year-old who had lived in Agadez for 28 years, was involved in supporting education and local NGOs in sectors like ecology and art.

The abduction occurred on Saturday evening when armed kidnappers arrived at Gretzmacher’s home, forcing her security guard to open the door at gunpoint before abducting her. The Austrian Ministry is working closely with Nigerien officials to secure her release, though no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Niger has been facing increasing security threats from armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The security situation worsened after the military coup in July 2023, which ousted the democratically elected government and expelled French and U.S. forces, turning to Russian mercenaries for stability. Despite promises of restoring peace, the military's ability to secure the country has been questioned as attacks by armed groups continue to escalate.

Niger, a key player in the fight against armed rebellions in West Africa, has seen its security deteriorate as the conflict spreads across the Sahel region. Before the coup, Niger was considered one of the few democratic partners in the region for Western nations combating the insurgencies.
