Strengthening Morocco-Spain connectivity: A strategic step forward

The relationship between Morocco and Spain continues to grow, with expanding collaborations in various sectors. The Spanish government has recently pledged substantial funding to improve key infrastructure, including the enhancement of access to the Port of Algeciras and the feasibility study for an underwater link between Spain and Morocco. In total, more than €91.7 million from the Recovery Plan will be allocated to these projects and other infrastructure developments.

The Spanish government has earmarked over €91.7 million for the province of Cádiz as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR). This funding will support several mobility and sustainable infrastructure projects in various municipalities.

Among the most significant initiatives is the improvement of southern access to the Port of Algeciras, which involves expanding the N-350 road with a budget of over €45 million. This project aims to enhance the capacity and road safety of Spain's and the Mediterranean's main cargo port, while also improving its urban integration and road accessibility.

As part of the strategic connectivity efforts, the Spanish government has allocated €3 million for a feasibility study on the underwater link between Spain and Morocco. The Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies through the Strait of Gibraltar (SECEGSA) is leading the research, evaluating the most appropriate options and systems for this potential connection.

Sustainable mobility and pollution reduction are also key components of the PRTR investments in the region. Algeciras has received €4.6 million, while La Línea de la Concepción has been allocated €2.7 million for the establishment of Low Emission Zones. These initiatives aim to limit the circulation of the most polluting vehicles and improve air quality in these municipalities.

These projects are part of a broader plan to transform the infrastructure of both neighboring countries, focusing on improving connectivity, promoting sustainability, and modernizing strategic access points.
