Morocco embraces drone technology to enhance security measures

Morocco is entering a new era of security technology with innovative aerial tracking systems that assist police in locating suspects and directing units to act within legal guidelines.

At the recent 6th edition of the Open Days event, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) unveiled a new drone pavilion, highlighting a significant advancement in Morocco’s security operations. This pavilion stands out as a testament to the DGSN’s increasing reliance on state-of-the-art drone technology to bolster field operations, surveillance, and rapid response capabilities.

Chief Commissioner Mohamed Mrabet, head of division at the DGSN’s Directorate of Public Security, addressed attendees, noting the establishment of specialized central brigades tasked with managing drone deployment and piloting. These units, composed of trained personnel, are dedicated to supporting both national and international events held throughout the country while adhering to Morocco’s legal framework, including Law No. 09-08 concerning personal data protection.

“Thanks to their wide-angle view and real-time data, drones help strengthen coordination on the ground and offer strategic support to security operations,” Mrabet stated.

The drones have become essential tools in crowd control during major public events, such as sports gatherings, where they detect and track behaviors that may disrupt public order. Additionally, they play a crucial role in monitoring irregular migration routes, particularly in remote areas, providing fast and precise surveillance over extensive distances.

In road safety operations, drones aid in identifying dangerous driving behaviors, such as vehicles attempting to evade police control. Their aerial tracking capabilities enable law enforcement to locate suspects swiftly and direct field units to intervene in accordance with established legal procedures.

Within urban environments, drones enhance traditional patrol methods by monitoring traffic flow and identifying suspicious activities. This adaptable approach not only optimizes the allocation of human resources but also strengthens the overall security presence.

The DGSN’s investment in drone technology reflects a broader commitment to keeping pace with global advancements in artificial intelligence, ensuring more targeted, proactive, and rapid responses to emerging security challenges.
