A magnitude 4 earthquake shakes the Meknès region
A magnitude 4 earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded on Saturday evening in the province of Meknès, according to data released by the Institut National de Géophysique (ING).
The tremor occurred at 18:33 local time, with its epicenter located in the commune of Aïn Jemaa at an estimated depth of nine kilometers, according to the National Network for Seismic Monitoring and Alert.
The seismic activity was felt in several surrounding areas, prompting reactions on social media and testimonies from residents who described a brief but noticeable shaking.
No casualties or significant material damage have been reported by local authorities so far. However, the event comes amid increased vigilance following several recent tremors recorded in different parts of the country.
Morocco is located in a region of moderate seismic activity due to its position between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. As a result, certain northern and central areas are closely monitored by specialized institutions.
Geophysical monitoring services are currently analyzing the collected data to assess the evolution of the situation and to detect possible aftershocks.
