Morocco ranks 104th globally in political representation
Morocco ranks 104th out of 173 countries in the political representation index included in the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance’s latest global assessment of democratic performance.
According to the 2026 edition of the “State of Democracy in the World” report, released on September 15, Morocco scored 0.433 out of 1 on political representation, marking a marginal improvement from the previous edition.
The country recorded stronger results in several other dimensions measured by International IDEA. Morocco ranked 75th globally for rights, 97th for the rule of law and 99th for political participation.
In the regional comparison, Morocco was positioned just behind Türkiye, which ranked 103rd, and Jordan, which placed 102nd. It ranked ahead of Côte d’Ivoire at 105th, while Tunisia came 109th, Algeria 117th and Egypt 127th.
International IDEA cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from small differences between countries, citing the statistical uncertainty associated with the index. For Morocco, the estimated margin of uncertainty stands at 0.039, placing its potential ranking within a range between 98th and 109th.
The latest results also show a slight improvement compared with the previous edition. Morocco moved from 107th place, based on data for 2024, to 104th in the 2026 edition, while its score increased marginally from 0.432 to 0.433.
The political representation index assesses the extent to which political institutions reflect citizens’ preferences and provide mechanisms for public representation. Its criteria include the credibility of elections, the existence of an elected government, political party freedom, parliamentary effectiveness, the inclusiveness of voting rights and democratic representation at the local level.
The findings form part of the tenth edition of International IDEA’s “State of Democracy in the World” report, which examines democratic developments from 1975 through 2025. The assessment draws on 155 indicators combining expert evaluations, empirical data and composite measures covering different dimensions of democratic performance.
For Morocco, political representation was the lowest-ranked of the report’s four main dimensions. The country placed 104th in political representation, compared with 75th in rights, 97th in the rule of law and 99th in political participation.
The figures provide a snapshot of Morocco’s performance across different aspects of democratic governance, while the report’s uncertainty margins underline the need for caution when comparing closely ranked countries.
