Vilnius airport temporarily shuts down after balloons detected near airspace
Vilnius Airport in Lithuania briefly suspended all flights on Sunday after unidentified balloons were detected moving toward its airspace. Airport authorities said the halt was precautionary, aiming to ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft while the objects were assessed.
Operations were paused for a short period as aviation officials monitored the balloons’ trajectory and coordinated with national air defense units. The incident comes amid heightened regional security concerns, with Baltic countries keeping close watch on any unusual activity near their borders.
Flight schedules gradually resumed once authorities confirmed that the balloons no longer posed a threat. No delays or diversions of major significance were reported, although some passengers experienced short waiting periods inside the terminal.
This marks the second time in recent months that Vilnius Airport has taken similar measures due to unidentified airborne objects. Lithuanian officials emphasized that such precautions are standard procedure in order to maintain strict aviation safety standards.
