Egypt Tourist Bus Crash Near Cairo Kills 13 and Injures 34
A deadly road accident west of Cairo has left 13 people dead and 34 injured after a tourist bus collided with a heavy truck on Tuesday, according to Egypt’s state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper. The crash occurred on the Western Desert Road, a major route connecting the Egyptian capital with Assiut in the south.
Emergency teams were deployed to the scene as rescue and recovery operations continued. An Agence France-Presse (AFP) correspondent reported that authorities were using a crane to remove the wrecked bus, whose front section had been torn apart by the force of the collision.
Images from the scene revealed the severity of the impact, with twisted metal and debris scattered across the roadway. Passenger seats were also found along the roadside, highlighting the destructive force of the crash.
Injured passengers taken to hospital in Giza
The 34 injured people were transported to a hospital in Giza, located on the western bank of the Nile, Al-Ahram reported. Authorities had not yet disclosed the nationalities of those involved in the accident.
Further details about the circumstances of the collision, including the identities of the victims and the precise sequence of events, were not immediately available.
The incident adds to concerns over road safety in Egypt, where serious traffic accidents continue to claim lives across the country.
Road safety remains a major challenge
Traffic collisions in Egypt are frequently associated with dangerous driving, inadequate vehicle maintenance, deteriorating road conditions and inconsistent enforcement of traffic regulations.
Figures from Egypt’s national statistics agency indicate that nearly 6,000 people died in road accidents across the country last year, marking an increase in fatalities.
The scale of the problem has prompted renewed attention to road safety, particularly on long-distance routes connecting major cities and regional destinations.
Previous bus tragedy in the Sinai Peninsula
The latest crash follows another deadly bus accident in early September in the mountainous Sinai region, where 22 people were killed, including 10 Jordanian nationals.
The two incidents underscore the risks faced by passengers travelling on Egypt’s road network. While investigations are needed to establish the specific causes of each collision, the repeated loss of life highlights the importance of vehicle safety, responsible driving and effective enforcement of traffic rules.
As recovery operations continue following Tuesday’s crash, the authorities have yet to release information on the nationalities of the victims or provide further details about the investigation.
