Lithuania briefly closes Vilnius airport over suspected smuggler balloons from Belarus

Lithuanian authorities temporarily suspended operations at Vilnius International Airport after unidentified objects believed to be smuggler balloons entered the country’s airspace from neighboring Belarus.

According to airport officials, air traffic was halted for approximately one hour overnight as a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety and protect aviation operations. Flights resumed once the situation was assessed by authorities.

Lithuania has reported several similar incidents in recent months, with officials claiming that smugglers are increasingly using weather balloons to transport cigarettes and other goods across the border. These devices are often carried by wind currents and can travel long distances before landing.

Authorities in Vilnius have expressed concern about the growing frequency of such operations, describing them as both a security and economic challenge. Illegal cigarette trafficking remains a significant issue in parts of Eastern Europe, where price differences between countries create profitable black-market activities.

Lithuanian officials have also criticized Belarus for failing to prevent the practice, amid broader political tensions between the two neighboring countries. Relations between the European Union and Belarus have remained strained in recent years over border security, migration issues, and regional geopolitical disputes.

Experts note that while these balloons are generally associated with smuggling rather than direct military threats, they can still disrupt civilian aviation and require immediate response measures from airport and airspace authorities.

The incident highlights the increasing complexity of border security challenges in the region, where unconventional smuggling methods continue to evolve.
