American Airlines anticipates a loss in 2026 due to rising fuel costs
The American airline is revising its financial forecasts for 2026 and now expects an adjusted loss of up to $1.60 per share. The rise in jet fuel prices is impacting its margins, despite the increase in airfares.
American Airlines has downgraded its financial outlook for 2026. The company announced on Thursday, October 22, that it now expects to report an adjusted loss for the entire year, abandoning its previous forecasts which suggested the possibility of a profit.
The carrier now anticipates an adjusted loss between $1 and $1.60 per share. In its previous estimate, the company was projecting a result ranging from a profit of $0.65 per share to a loss of the same amount.
This revision reflects the difficulties faced by the company in absorbing the increase in its operating costs. According to Reuters, the rise in jet fuel prices is outpacing the gains generated by the increase in ticket prices, thereby reducing the company's margins.
Fuel costs weigh on the carrier's margins
Fuel represents a significant expense for airlines. When its price rises rapidly, carriers must find a balance between controlling their costs and maintaining competitive fares.
American Airlines is confronted with this equation: the price increases applied to tickets are no longer sufficient to offset the rising energy bill. This pressure on margins directly affects the group's profitability outlook.
The revision of forecasts also highlights the limitations of pricing strategies when costs rise faster than revenues generated from sales.
Downgraded financial outlook
The abandonment of the previous forecast range marks a significant change in the group's expectations for the 2026 fiscal year. While the company was still considering a scenario that could yield an adjusted profit, it now expects a loss across all communicated scenarios.
The expected adjusted result is between -$1 and -$1.60 per share, compared to a previous range of +$0.65 to -$0.65.
This development highlights the pressure exerted by energy costs on the airline sector. For American Airlines, the ability to control expenses and preserve unit revenues will be crucial in mitigating the effects of this financial deterioration.
