US hybrid car sales soar as fuel prices rise

American consumers are increasingly turning to hybrid vehicles as gasoline prices surge following geopolitical tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran. Recent industry data shows a clear shift in buying behavior as drivers look for more fuel-efficient alternatives.

According to market research figures, hybrid car sales in the United States increased by around 37% in the two months following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East at the end of February. This growth significantly outpaced the overall automotive market, which expanded by about 15% during the same period.

Despite higher fuel costs pushing consumers toward more efficient vehicles, fully electric cars have not experienced the same level of demand. Even though gasoline prices recently exceeded $4 per gallon, reaching a four-year high, electric vehicle sales grew by only 11% in the same timeframe.

Analysts note that the expiration of federal tax incentives last year has also contributed to slowing EV momentum in the United States. In contrast, hybrid vehicles continue to benefit from their balance of affordability and fuel efficiency.

The trend in the U.S. differs from Europe, where electric vehicle adoption is accelerating more rapidly. European consumers face higher fuel prices and stricter environmental regulations, and they also have access to a wider range of lower-cost electric models.

Pickup truck sales, however, remain strong in the U.S. market, supported by discounts and continued consumer preference despite rising fuel costs.
