United States strengthens Ebola precaution measures while saying public risk remains low
Health authorities in the United States have announced new precautionary measures to reduce the potential risk of Ebola entering the country, following concerns linked to a recent outbreak in parts of Africa. Officials, however, emphasized that the immediate risk to the public remains low.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that it will begin enhanced screening and monitoring of travelers who have recently been in or departed from affected regions, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. The measures aim to detect possible cases during the virus’s incubation period, which can last up to 21 days.
According to health experts, the virus can spread before symptoms appear, making international monitoring an important tool for prevention. For this reason, U.S. authorities are strengthening surveillance systems at ports of entry and improving coordination with international health agencies.
The CDC also confirmed that the new measures will not apply to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents. The order will remain in effect for 30 days and may be adjusted depending on the evolution of the outbreak situation abroad.
In addition to travel monitoring, U.S. officials are increasing laboratory testing capacity, improving hospital preparedness, and strengthening contact tracing systems nationwide. These steps are intended to ensure rapid response capabilities in case of any imported infections.
Health authorities stressed that the actions are precautionary and based on global risk assessment rather than evidence of domestic transmission. They also highlighted the importance of maintaining readiness while avoiding public alarm.
Experts continue to monitor outbreaks in affected African regions closely, as international cooperation remains essential in preventing the spread of highly infectious diseases.
