Ukrainian F-16 pilot dies defending against large-scale Russian air assault

A Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilot lost his life while defending against a massive Russian air offensive involving hundreds of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, officials reported. This intense attack marks a continuation of Moscow’s increased nighttime air raids during the fourth year of conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged greater Western assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities following the assault, which caused damage to homes and infrastructure and left at least seven people injured, according to local sources.

The Ukrainian military confirmed the loss of its third F-16 fighter jet since the beginning of the war during this defense operation. Though Kyiv has not disclosed the total number of operational jets, these aircraft have become a vital and heavily utilized component of Ukraine’s air defense.

Zelenskiy emphasized that Moscow will persist in its attacks as long as it retains the capacity to carry out large-scale strikes, citing that over 114 missiles, more than 1,270 drones, and nearly 1,100 glide bombs were deployed just in the past week.

The Ukrainian military detailed that overnight, Russia launched 477 drones and 60 various missiles, while Ukrainian forces intercepted and destroyed 211 drones and 38 missiles using all available defensive means capable of engaging enemy aerial assets.

Recent weeks have seen repeated large-scale Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, resulting in widespread destruction and numerous civilian casualties. Following the latest assault, explosions were reported across several regions, including Lviv, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, and Ivano-Frankivsk.

In the Cherkasy region, six individuals—including a child—were injured, and damage was sustained to several buildings and a college. Additional injuries and industrial damage were reported in other affected regions.

Local authorities released images showing damaged multi-storey buildings with burn marks and shattered windows, alongside rescue operations evacuating residents.

Zelenskiy highlighted the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems, requesting additional Patriot missile batteries from the United States and emphasizing the necessity of political commitment and international support to protect lives and end the war.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the fallen pilot fought valiantly, managing to shoot down seven enemy targets before his aircraft was critically damaged and descended. He attempted to steer the jet away from populated areas but did not have time to eject.

The military also noted that 225 drones were lost during the attacks, either redirected by electronic warfare or being drone simulators without warheads.
