Ukraine faces 50 daily Russian assaults near key Donbass cities
Russian forces are launching around 50 daily clashes against Ukrainian positions in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad area of Donetsk Oblast, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on January 19 after visiting the contested front line. These engagements mark one of the war's most intense concentrations, as Moscow aims to seize what Ukraine terms a "fortress city" while encircling a neighboring hub.
Syrskyi characterized the operational situation as "difficult," with an "exhausting confrontation" underway in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad agglomeration. In a Facebook update, he noted Russian troops are rushing reserves to Pokrovsk, probing for breakthroughs through sporadic mass assaults and stealthy small-infantry advances.
The front line tally for January 18 logged 144 clashes across Ukraine, with the Pokrovsk direction alone accounting for 28 to 50 distinct assault attempts the by far most active sector. Ukrainian defenders repelled most attacks, though one clash remained ongoing at the time of reporting.
Myrnohrad, a satellite city less than 3 kilometers from Pokrovsk, confronts what Ukrainian officers call a "critical" situation. Roman Pysarenko, communications chief for the 79th Tavriya Separate Air Assault Brigade, confirmed Russians have massed over ten units around the city, advancing simultaneously from west, east, south, and north to sever Ukrainian logistics.
"They are trying by all means to concentrate forces... to cut our logistics as much as possible and effectively encircle our troops," Pysarenko stated. A Ukrainian officer told UNIAN that Myrnohrad's southern part has been under Russian control for weeks, though Ukrainian forces hold the northern sector.
The Institute for the Study of War assessed that Russian infiltration attempts into central Myrnohrad on January 17 and 18 yielded no territorial gains, as Ukrainians struck the infiltrators.
Ukrainian military analysts emphasize Moscow views capturing these cities not just as battlefield wins but as political leverage in potential talks. The Kremlin seeks to showcase offensive momentum to extract Donbass-wide concessions from Ukraine.
Syrskyi affirmed defenders are holding the line despite numerical inferiority. "Their professionalism, endurance, dedication, and combat experience prevent Russian occupiers from achieving their aim of breaking through to the western borders of Donetsk Oblast," he said.
Pokrovsk has seen fierce fighting for over a year, with Ukraine outnumbered roughly 8-to-1 in the region. Early January estimates put about 1,250 civilians still in the city, evacuation operations suspended amid the combat intensity.
