UK police to release suspects’ ethnicity and nationality amid disinformation concerns
The UK government has announced new guidance encouraging police forces to disclose the ethnicity and nationality of suspects when they are charged in high-profile or sensitive cases. Policing Minister Diana Johnson emphasized that while releasing this information could help counter disinformation, it will not prevent all instances of false reporting.
The guidance, issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and the College of Policing, follows criticism that authorities previously “covered up” details about suspects, particularly in cases involving asylum seekers. The move aims to increase transparency and reduce the spread of misleading narratives, especially in incidents that attract significant public attention.
Johnson also addressed concerns over facial recognition technology, stating it would be used in a “measured and proportionate way” to support police in tracking individuals involved in serious crimes, with human oversight remaining essential.
The government’s interim guidance leaves final decisions about releasing information to individual police forces, taking into account legal and ethical considerations. The Home Office will also determine if it is appropriate to confirm a suspect’s immigration status.
