Uganda: King Oyo Laid to Rest Amid Succession Dispute

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was buried on Saturday in Uganda, in the Tooro Kingdom, thirty-one years after ascending to the throne. His funeral was marked by a significant public procession and ongoing tensions surrounding the identity of his successor.

A Final Ceremony in the Tooro Kingdom

The sovereign's coffin was transported through the streets of Fort Portal, the capital of the Tooro Kingdom, to the Karambi Royal Tombs. Royal guards dressed in orange shawls accompanied the procession, followed on foot by thousands of people who came to pay their respects to the monarch.

During the ceremony, his designated successor, Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, threw nine coffee beans into the grave. This symbolic gesture marked the official transfer of power within the traditional kingdom located in western Uganda.

The burial took place exactly 31 years after Oyo's coronation, as he became king in 1995 at the age of just three.

A Royal Figure Known Worldwide

Oyo attracted international attention from the moment he ascended the throne. His very young age, royal appearances, and images of the crowned child made him, for many years, the youngest monarch in the world.

The sovereign passed away last month in the United States at the age of 34 while receiving treatment for cancer.

Despite his status, Oyo operated in a country with a republican political system. However, Uganda still retains several traditional kingdoms that predate the British colonial period. These institutions continue to play an important role in preserving the history and cultural identity of various communities.

Tribute to a Described Discreet King

Before the burial, a religious ceremony allowed his relatives to pay tribute to his personality. His sister, Ruth Komuntale, described a man who, despite the responsibilities of royal duty, had retained a part of the child he once was.

Oyo also held public positions beyond his kingdom. He had been appointed a United Nations goodwill ambassador to support the fight against HIV and AIDS.

A Succession that Divides the Royal Family

The funeral comes after several days of tensions within the royal family.

On Wednesday, a committee composed of members of the royal clan announced the designation of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new king. A journalist, presenter, and editor at the public channel UBC, he is a cousin of the late sovereign.

This decision is contested by Oyo's close family, who assert that the late king's son should succeed him, in accordance with the king's last wishes.

The existence of this child was not publicly known until the announcement of Oyo's death. The kingdom's prime minister then indicated that the sovereign had a son, even though he had never been officially married and no child had been publicly attributed to him until then.

A Transition Still Under Tension

Oyo's burial thus represents an important step for the Tooro Kingdom, but it does not necessarily put an end to the dispute over the succession.

Behind the traditional ceremony now lies the question of the legitimacy of the next sovereign. The choice of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma by part of the royal clan and the claim made on behalf of the late king's son could continue to fuel tensions within the royal family.
