UAE reinforces unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy plan

The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its steadfast backing for Morocco’s autonomy proposal regarding the Moroccan Sahara, emphasizing its alignment with international law and UN principles. Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee in New York, the Emirati representative reiterated the country’s full support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Firm diplomatic backing at the UN

The UAE envoy declared that his nation “renews its total support to the brother Kingdom of Morocco in its sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara,” confirming its endorsement of the autonomy initiative as a framework for lasting stability. He highlighted that Morocco’s approach is consistent with the UN Charter and relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

The diplomat also praised Morocco’s new development model for its southern provinces, describing it as a tangible effort to enhance living standards and economic opportunities in the region. According to the UAE’s statement, this initiative has contributed to measurable improvements in human development indicators.

Broadening international consensus

The Emirati representative commended ongoing efforts by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to facilitate a political solution to the long-standing dispute. The UAE’s declaration reinforces the growing global consensus that views Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible path forward.

The United States, which officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara in 2020, has repeatedly reiterated this stance. Former President Donald Trump recently reaffirmed that the autonomy plan remains the only “serious, credible, and realistic” solution.

Several European nations, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal, have also endorsed Morocco’s proposal, acknowledging its legitimacy and feasibility. Across Africa, countries such as Ghana and Kenya have joined the expanding coalition supporting Morocco’s position.

A regional shift in favor of Morocco

The mounting international endorsements have further isolated the Polisario Front, which continues to receive backing from Algeria. The momentum in diplomatic support underscores Morocco’s strengthened regional and global standing, as more nations embrace its autonomy initiative as the most practical route to resolving the long-standing dispute over Sahara.
