Turkey's advertising regulator has fined Adidas for failing to disclose the use of pigskin in its popular Samba OG sneakers. The company had labeled the shoes as made from "real leather" without specifying the origin of the material, a detail deemed to contradict the religious beliefs of the country's Muslim majority.

The regulator stressed that materials conflicting with the "religious sensibilities of the majority" must be explicitly mentioned in advertisements. Adidas acknowledged that it had updated the product description on its Turkish website but refrained from commenting on the imposed fine.

This incident follows a 2020 ruling from Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs, which stated that pigskin is "not permissible" for use in clothing or footwear under Islamic law, as it cannot be purified through tanning or other methods.
