Hind Rajab Foundation Urges US Investigation Into Former Israeli Military Officer
The Hind Rajab Foundation has called on US authorities to investigate and arrest a former Israeli military officer it suspects of involvement in the 2024 killing of five-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab in Gaza. The organisation claims the individual is currently in the United States, although American authorities have not publicly confirmed whether they are pursuing the case.
In a complaint submitted on Monday, the Belgium-based organisation urged the US Department of Justice to examine evidence it says could link the Israeli national, identified by the initials S.G., to the fatal shooting. The allegations have not resulted in a judicial ruling, and no official response from the US Justice Department has been reported.
The request has also received support from Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib, who publicly called for an investigation into the officer's alleged role in the incident.
Foundation presents evidence in support of its allegations
According to the Hind Rajab Foundation, S.G. previously commanded a company within the 52nd Armoured Battalion of the Israeli military's 401st Brigade. The organisation argues that the unit's reported presence near the vehicle carrying Hind Rajab and members of her family is central to its case.
The foundation says its allegations draw on forensic assessments, geolocated photographs and material published on social media by the individual concerned. It contends that these elements suggest the officer may have ordered troops to open fire.
However, the evidence cited by the organisation has not been assessed in a publicly reported court judgment. The accusations therefore remain allegations rather than established findings of criminal responsibility.
Rashida Tlaib calls for federal scrutiny
Tlaib has amplified the foundation's appeal through a post on X, arguing that US authorities should investigate the individual reportedly present in the country.
The congresswoman described the officer as the commander of a unit she said was probably responsible for the child's death. Her intervention adds a political dimension to the foundation's attempt to bring the allegations before American law enforcement.
Whether the Justice Department will open an investigation, and whether the available evidence could support criminal proceedings under US law, remains unclear.
Wider allegations involving Israeli military operations
The foundation's complaint extends beyond the circumstances of Hind Rajab's death. It also accuses the military unit of involvement in alleged unlawful killings, torture, forced displacement and the destruction of civilian property without military justification.
The document reportedly refers to operations around Gaza City's al-Shifa hospital complex, the Zeitoun neighbourhood and the Rafah border crossing. These allegations form part of the organisation's broader effort to seek legal accountability outside Israel for conduct attributed to Israeli military personnel.
The claims have not been established through a final judicial determination in the proceedings described by the foundation.
International legal pressure and competing positions
Based in Belgium, the Hind Rajab Foundation pursues legal initiatives abroad against Israeli soldiers and officials over alleged violations of Palestinian rights. Its strategy seeks to use national legal systems outside the conflict zone to examine allegations that might otherwise face significant obstacles to prosecution.
The organisation's activities have drawn criticism from Israel and its supporters, who characterise such efforts as attempts to target Israeli military personnel and undermine the legitimacy of the Israel Defense Forces.
For now, the latest complaint remains an appeal for action rather than a confirmed criminal case in the United States. No response from the US Department of Justice has been reported, leaving the prospect of an investigation uncertain.
The case highlights the continuing efforts by advocacy groups to pursue alleged crimes linked to the Gaza conflict through international and domestic legal channels, while underscoring the distinction between allegations submitted by campaigners and conclusions reached by judicial authorities.
