Train collision in Indonesia leaves 16 dead, all women, police say
A train collision near Jakarta, Indonesia, has resulted in at least 16 deaths, all of whom are women, according to local police. The number of fatalities rose after one injured passenger died in hospital, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The accident occurred on Monday evening near Bekasi Timur station, approximately 25 kilometers east of the capital. A commuter train was struck by a long-distance passenger train while it was stationary at a railway crossing following an earlier road incident involving a taxi.
Reports indicate that the long-distance train hit the last carriage of the commuter train, which was designated for female passengers. Emergency services reported that around 90 people were injured in the crash, while 44 have already been discharged from hospital.
Investigations are ongoing, with transport authorities examining the role of the taxi incident and overall safety conditions at railway crossings. Indonesian officials have called for improvements to national rail infrastructure following the tragedy.
The president has also urged a nationwide modernization of level crossings to prevent similar accidents in the future.
