NBA: Maxime Raynaud Targets Sacramento Kings Comeback After Knee Injury
French basketball player Maxime Raynaud is looking forward to returning to competitive action after a frustrating knee injury disrupted the beginning of his second NBA season. Despite being sidelined, the Sacramento Kings center remains closely involved with his teammates as he works through rehabilitation and prepares for his comeback.
At 23, Raynaud is approaching his recovery cautiously following a partial dislocation of his right kneecap sustained during a preseason encounter against the Golden State Warriors. The injury initially raised concerns about his availability for the start of the campaign, forcing him to put his ambitions on hold after an encouraging first year in the league.
A Gradual Recovery After a Difficult Setback
In an interview with Agence France-Presse on Friday, November 6, Raynaud explained that his condition has improved considerably. Nearly four weeks after the incident, he has resumed some on-court activities while continuing his rehabilitation programme.
The French international is following the recommendations of Sacramento's coaching and medical staff, prioritising a gradual return rather than rushing back into competition.
The interruption has nevertheless been difficult psychologically. After spending more than five years without missing a game because of an injury, Raynaud admitted that being forced to watch from the sidelines was particularly disappointing, especially after an intensive summer of preparation.
Sacramento Kings Struggling With Injuries
Raynaud's absence comes at a challenging moment for Sacramento. The Kings have endured a difficult opening to the 2026-2027 NBA season, recording just one victory in their first nine games.
The team's problems have been compounded by several injuries affecting important players. Ben Simmons has suffered an Achilles tendon rupture that is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the season, while Keegan Murray has also experienced injury-related interruptions.
According to Raynaud, the accumulation of these setbacks has prevented Sacramento from building the collective chemistry and consistency it had hoped to establish early in the campaign.
Nevertheless, he remains confident in the squad's potential, believing that the team has enough individual quality to find its rhythm once more players become available.
An Important Offensive Contribution Expected
When he returns, Raynaud hopes to strengthen several aspects of the Kings' game. His ambitions extend beyond scoring, although he expects to bring additional offensive production and improve the team's movement in attack.
He also intends to contribute defensively through communication, greater presence in the paint and a playing style that makes things easier for his teammates.
His continued involvement with the squad reflects his determination to remain part of the team's collective development. Despite being unable to participate fully in training sessions, he attends meetings, travels with the group and follows the team's activities.
Rehabilitation has also changed his daily routine, requiring additional time for medical treatment, individual work and discussions with the coaching staff.
A Promising Young Career in Sacramento
Raynaud has strong reasons to remain optimistic about his future in California. Selected by the Kings with the 42nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, he made an encouraging impression during his rookie campaign.
He averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game across 74 appearances, establishing himself as one of Sacramento's promising young players.
The French center also highlighted the importance of the organisation's investment in its younger generation, particularly under general manager Scott Perry, who selected him in the draft.
With two years remaining on his contract, Raynaud hopes to establish a long-term future with the franchise.
His first NBA season also taught him how physically and mentally demanding an 82-game schedule can be. Managing recovery, preparing for consecutive games and maintaining consistency are among the lessons he intends to carry into the next stages of his career.
Looking Ahead to a Return to the Court
Beyond his immediate recovery, Raynaud continues to follow the development of French basketball in the NBA. He also sent his best wishes to compatriot Victor Wembanyama, stressing the importance of health and enjoyment in a demanding professional environment.
For the Sacramento center, the immediate priority remains completing his rehabilitation and regaining full fitness. His determination to return could provide an important boost to a Kings team seeking stability after a difficult start.
Although no definitive comeback date has been established, Raynaud's gradual progress offers encouragement to Sacramento supporters and French basketball fans awaiting his return.
