Ukraine: Massive Russian Overnight Strikes Target Energy Infrastructure and Disrupt Kyiv
Ukraine faced another major wave of Russian attacks overnight on November 6–7, as missiles and drones struck the capital, Kyiv, and several surrounding areas, causing significant damage to energy facilities, residential buildings and critical transport infrastructure.
The latest offensive has intensified concerns over the country's ability to maintain essential services as winter approaches, with Ukrainian authorities reporting serious disruptions to electricity, heating and water supplies.
Kyiv Faces Major Energy Disruptions
Explosions were reported across Kyiv during the night as Russian forces launched successive waves of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia deployed 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles during the operation, targeting several locations across the country.
The strikes caused damage to energy installations in multiple districts of the Kyiv region. Vitali Klitschko, the city's mayor, described the situation affecting the capital's energy supply as extremely difficult, warning of the consequences for electricity, heating and water distribution.
The attacks also resulted in casualties. Ukrainian authorities reported that at least one person was killed and eight others, including a child, were injured. Several residential properties and non-residential buildings sustained damage.
Northern Bridge Among the Infrastructure Hit
The Northern Bridge, an important transport crossing over the Dnipro River in Kyiv, was also damaged during the bombardment.
According to Mayor Klitschko, several missiles struck the structure, affecting sections of its roadway and electrical installations. The damage prompted its temporary closure in both directions, disrupting movement across part of the capital.
Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed that its forces had targeted the bridge, claiming it was being used to transport military equipment and supplies for the Ukrainian armed forces.
Moscow also reported strikes against industrial and energy-related facilities in the Kyiv region, including a power plant, an electricity substation and a facility associated with ammunition production. Additional damage was reported at an electricity substation in the Zhytomyr region.
Winter Adds Pressure on Ukraine's Energy System
The latest attacks come at a particularly difficult moment for Ukraine, as falling temperatures increase demand for electricity and heating.
Repeated Russian strikes against power generation facilities, transmission networks and other essential infrastructure have placed considerable pressure on the country's energy system. Any further damage could complicate efforts to maintain reliable services for households, hospitals and businesses.
The consequences extend beyond immediate power shortages, potentially affecting water distribution, public transport and the functioning of essential public services.
New Attacks Ahead of Diplomatic Talks
The escalation comes just days before another round of negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States is expected to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11.
The discussions form part of Washington's efforts to advance a diplomatic solution to the conflict. However, continued military operations and disagreements over security and territorial issues remain significant obstacles.
The latest bombardment highlights the difficult environment in which diplomatic efforts are unfolding. While negotiations seek a possible path towards ending the war, attacks on critical infrastructure continue to expose Ukrainian civilians to serious risks.
For Kyiv, restoring damaged facilities and maintaining essential services will remain urgent priorities as the country prepares for the winter months.
