Fox-Roku Acquisition: Fox Completes $22 Billion Deal to Reshape the Streaming Industry
Fox Corporation has officially completed its $22 billion acquisition of Roku, marking a major turning point in the American media landscape and significantly expanding the company's presence in the rapidly evolving streaming and connected television markets.
Finalized on November 6, 2026, the transaction brings one of the world's best-known streaming platforms under Fox's ownership. The deal combines Fox's established presence in news, sports and entertainment broadcasting with Roku's extensive digital distribution infrastructure, creating a stronger position in an increasingly competitive television market.
A Strategic Move to Reach More Than 100 Million Households
One of the acquisition's most significant advantages for Fox is access to Roku's platform, which reaches more than 100 million households worldwide. This extensive audience provides the media group with new opportunities to expand its digital services, attract advertisers and develop more sophisticated advertising strategies.
The combination is particularly important as traditional television distribution continues to face pressure from the growing popularity of streaming services. By integrating Roku into its portfolio, Fox aims to reduce its dependence on conventional television networks while strengthening its direct relationship with viewers.
The group also expects the acquisition to improve its ability to monetize digital audiences by combining its content portfolio with Roku's connected television technology and advertising capabilities.
Financial Benefits and New Leadership Structure
Beyond expanding its market reach, Fox anticipates substantial financial benefits from the transaction. The company estimates that the acquisition could generate approximately $400 million in annualized cost synergies within two years of closing.
The agreement also establishes a new ownership structure. Fox shareholders hold approximately 74% of the combined company's outstanding shares, while former Roku shareholders retain around 26%.
Roku founder Anthony Wood will join Fox's board of directors and take on a leadership position as Co-Chair of FOX Digital Platforms. The newly established division brings together Roku, Tubi, FOX One, Red Seat Ventures and other digital businesses.
Paul Cheesbrough will serve alongside Wood as Co-Chair and Chief Executive of the division, overseeing the development of Fox's expanding digital operations.
Roku's Open Platform to Remain a Central Priority
Despite the change in ownership, Fox has indicated that preserving Roku's open distribution model will remain a fundamental part of its strategy.
The platform will continue to provide access to thousands of applications and channels, including services operated by companies that compete directly with Fox. Maintaining this approach is particularly important for protecting Roku's appeal among viewers, content providers and commercial partners.
The regulatory review had involved additional information requests from the US Department of Justice. The transaction's completion ultimately came considerably earlier than initially anticipated, as the companies had originally expected the acquisition to close during the first half of 2027.
A New Chapter in the Competition for Streaming Audiences
The acquisition represents more than a change in corporate ownership. It reflects the growing importance of controlling both content distribution and the technology through which audiences consume television.
For Fox, combining its established news and sports programming with Roku's extensive household reach could create new commercial opportunities, particularly in advertising and digital subscriptions.
The challenge ahead will be to integrate the two businesses while maintaining Roku's independence as an open platform and preserving relationships with its broad network of content partners.
As competition intensifies among streaming providers, technology companies and traditional broadcasters, the Fox-Roku combination could become an influential force in shaping the next phase of the television industry.
