Spanish premier calls for end to conflicts and greater China role

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for renewed international efforts to end ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a stronger diplomatic role from China on the global stage.

Speaking during an official visit to Beijing, Sánchez highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation and respect for international law as key elements in resolving current crises. He noted that China, as a major global power, has the capacity to influence peace efforts in regions affected by prolonged instability.

During his address at a leading academic institution, Sánchez stressed that global progress is no longer driven by a single center of power, but rather by multiple regions contributing simultaneously to international development. He described this shift as a defining feature of the modern geopolitical landscape.

The Spanish leader is expected to meet with Xi Jinping during his visit, marking another step in strengthening ties between Madrid and Beijing. The trip reflects Spain’s broader strategy of engaging with key global partners beyond Europe.

Sánchez also addressed the relationship between Europe and China, underlining the importance of cooperation between the European Union and the Asian economic giant. He pointed out that both sides have benefited from economic collaboration in the past and could continue to do so in the future.

In addition, Spain has taken firm positions on recent international developments, including military tensions in the Middle East. Sánchez reiterated that adherence to international law remains essential for maintaining global stability and preventing further escalation.

Trade relations between Spain and China have grown steadily in recent years, reflecting deepening economic ties. The visit is expected to further enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, diplomacy, and global governance.
