Moroccan Sahara: Djibouti Welcomes UN Security Council Resolution 2797
Djibouti has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative concerning the Moroccan Sahara, describing the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 as an important step toward achieving a lasting political settlement.
The position was conveyed on Monday by Zeinab Ismael Assoweh, an adviser at Djibouti’s mission to the United Nations, during a session of the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee in New York.
Addressing the committee, Assoweh reaffirmed her country’s backing for the Moroccan proposal, arguing that it could provide a framework for constructive dialogue and contribute to restoring peace and stability in the region.
UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in Focus
Djibouti welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the Security Council, viewing it as a significant development in efforts to reach what it described as a just and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
According to Assoweh, the resolution represents progress in the search for a political settlement. Djibouti’s statement also underscored the importance it attaches to dialogue as a means of addressing the longstanding regional dispute.
The remarks place Djibouti among the countries that have publicly expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative in discussions held within the United Nations framework.
Morocco’s Development Investments Highlighted
Beyond the diplomatic dimension, Djibouti also welcomed Morocco’s social and economic investments in its Southern Provinces.
Assoweh said these development efforts reflected Morocco’s commitment to the region’s sustainable development. Her remarks highlighted the economic and social dimension of the issue alongside ongoing diplomatic discussions at the United Nations.
Investment in infrastructure, public services and local economic development has remained an important element of Morocco’s approach to developing its Southern Provinces.
Diplomacy Continues at the United Nations
Djibouti’s statement came during deliberations of the Fourth Committee, which addresses decolonization and related international questions within the UN General Assembly.
The intervention reflects the continued engagement of UN member states in discussions surrounding the Moroccan Sahara issue and the search for a political solution.
By renewing its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative and welcoming Resolution 2797, Djibouti has reaffirmed its diplomatic position while emphasizing dialogue, regional stability and sustainable development as key considerations in efforts to resolve the dispute.
