Trump Floats Renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean as “Trump Ocean”

Tuesday 13 - 15:53

US President Donald Trump has raised the possibility of renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, suggesting that one could become known as the “Trump Ocean” or the “Ocean of the Americas.” The idea follows a series of controversial moves to change the names of prominent geographic features associated with the United States.

Speaking at an event in Tennessee over the weekend, Trump said he wanted the country to have an ocean bearing a new name before he leaves office. He referred to previous naming changes as examples, although he did not identify which of the two oceans he would prefer to rename.

Trump’s remarks appear to build on his administration’s effort to promote alternative names for well-known locations. These include the use of “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in US federal naming and mapping contexts. The source report also refers to the name “Lake America” for Lake Ontario, though the status and scope of that designation would need independent confirmation.

The president said he hoped to complete the proposed change before the end of his term. He ruled out similar changes to the names of the Hudson and Mississippi rivers, but offered no details on how an ocean-renaming process might proceed.

Changing the name of an ocean would raise questions beyond domestic US policy. Geographic names are used by governments, international organisations, scientific institutions, navigational services and map publishers around the world. A name adopted for use by US federal agencies would not automatically become the internationally recognised name, particularly for geographic features shared by or adjacent to multiple countries.

For now, Trump’s comments amount to a proposal rather than a confirmed policy decision. No specific ocean has been selected, and the practical steps required to establish a new name have not been outlined.
