Portugal weighs recognizing Palestinian state amid rising tensions

The Portuguese government has announced plans to consult the president and Parliament regarding the recognition of the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. According to a statement released Thursday by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s office, the recognition could be finalized during the high-level week of the UN’s 80th session in New York.

The decision follows "multiple consultations" with international partners and reflects growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Israel's repeated references to the potential annexation of Palestinian territories.

A growing push for Palestinian recognition

Portugal joins a growing list of nations, including Canada, France, and the United Kingdom, that have signaled their intention to recognize Palestinian statehood during the UN session. The announcement aligns with mounting international pressure to address the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The decision comes amidst warnings from a UN-backed hunger monitoring organization, which described the situation in Gaza as a "worst-case famine scenario."

Speaking shortly after the government’s announcement, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa welcomed the move, calling it the result of a “careful and thoughtful process.” Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel echoed this sentiment in an interview with the public broadcaster RTP, describing the decision as “deeply considered” and emphasizing Portugal’s commitment to working with European and global partners.

France and others lead the way

Portugal’s announcement follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration last week that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine at the UN in September. Macron said he hopes this decision will inspire collective momentum toward peace in the region.

Portugal’s deliberative approach reflects its intent to align with European allies, ensuring the recognition of Palestine is part of a coordinated international effort.
