NATO intern arrested in Belgium over suspected espionage investigation

Belgian authorities have arrested a Canadian national of Chinese origin working as an intern at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) as part of an investigation into suspected espionage on behalf of a foreign state.

The arrest was carried out on Thursday by Belgium's Federal Judicial Police and was confirmed by the Federal Prosecutor's Office, which said the suspect is being investigated for alleged espionage activities and participation in a criminal organization.

According to prosecutors, the intern was assigned to SHAPE, NATO's strategic military headquarters located in Mons, Belgium. Officials have not publicly identified the country that the suspect is alleged to have acted on behalf of, referring only to "a third country."

Belgian authorities stated that the case originated after SHAPE's internal security services detected suspicious activity and reported their concerns to the General Intelligence and Security Service (SGRS), Belgium's military intelligence agency. The referral subsequently led to the criminal investigation and the suspect's arrest.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office has not disclosed further details regarding the nature of the alleged espionage activities or the information that may have been targeted. Investigators are continuing to examine the evidence while determining whether additional individuals or networks may be connected to the case.

The investigation highlights the heightened focus on counterintelligence within NATO and European security institutions as concerns over foreign espionage and intelligence operations continue to grow.
