New Network Heralds Enhanced Economic Partnership Between Australia and Morocco

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering international trade and economic cooperation, the Australia Morocco Business Network (AMBN) has launched in Adelaide, marking the first organization dedicated to promoting bilateral trade between Australia and Morocco. This strategic move promises to unlock new business opportunities and deepen economic ties between the two nations.

The establishment of AMBN coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the Enthronement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, making it a particularly significant moment to inaugurate Australia's premier platform for fostering trade relations with Morocco.

Leadership and Board of Directors

At the helm of the newly formed network is Mr. Soufiane Rboub, a Moroccan native, whose extensive background includes serving as the former President of the Arab Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and as a board member of an advisory committee to the Foreign Minister on Arab-Australian relations (CAAR). Mr. Rboub is supported by a distinguished board of directors, all of whom bring deep expertise and a vested interest in Morocco and Africa, ensuring AMBN is poised to drive meaningful initiatives.

The network's launch saw the attendance of numerous businesses and government representatives, including the Minister for Trade's representative, Mr. Tally Reaburn, and the CEO of the South Australian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Andrew Kay, among other notable guests.

Economic and Trade Opportunities

Mr. Rboub emphasized, "The choice of Adelaide, South Australia, for our network's launch is particularly fitting, given the shared priorities between South Australia and the Kingdom of Morocco in key sectors like renewable energy, green hydrogen, water management, and mining. South Australia, as the driest state in Australia, has developed advanced water resource management and recycling techniques that could greatly benefit Morocco, which also faces significant water scarcity issues."

Australia's expertise in renewable energy and green hydrogen aligns seamlessly with Morocco's ambitious goals to ramp up its renewable energy capacity. Strengthening ties through AMBN offers substantial potential for collaboration in these critical areas, enhancing sustainability and driving economic growth in both regions.

Trends in Bilateral Trade

Trade between Australia and Morocco has seen steady growth in recent years. In 2022, the total value of bilateral trade reached approximately AUD 250 million, with Australian exports accounting for around AUD 180 million. Australia's primary exports to Morocco include cereals, meat, and dairy products, while Morocco mainly exports phosphates, chemicals, and textiles to Australia.

The diversification of sectors involved in bilateral trade has also supported this growth. Beyond agricultural products and raw materials, there has been a significant increase in trade in services, particularly in education, tourism, and professional services. Australian companies are also establishing a presence in Morocco to access other regional markets, leveraging the country's strategic location.

Ms. Jade Evans, Director for the Middle East and Africa at Dragoman Consulting and AMBN board member, noted, "Morocco's strategic position as a gateway to Africa offers Australian businesses unparalleled access to the continent's emerging markets. Morocco provides a stable and business-friendly environment and is increasingly recognizing the role of women in economic growth. As a woman entrepreneur, I have seen firsthand that Morocco's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive business landscape creates many opportunities for innovation and collaboration."

Free Trade Agreements and Special Economic Zones

Morocco has secured numerous free trade agreements (FTAs) with international partners, including the European Union, the United States, and several African countries. These FTAs offer Australian businesses preferential access to many international markets when they establish operations in Morocco, making it an attractive gateway for companies looking to expand into Africa and beyond. By setting up in Morocco's special economic zones (SEZs), Australian companies can benefit from tax incentives, world-class infrastructure, and direct access to foreign markets through Morocco's FTAs, providing a significant competitive advantage.

The launch of AMBN also opens new avenues for Moroccan exporters to penetrate the Australian market. Australia represents a growing and diverse market for Moroccan products, particularly food products, textiles, and handicrafts. AMBN is committed to supporting these efforts by facilitating contacts with Australian importers, providing market information, and organizing trade missions and business delegations.

Professor Tim Harcourt, Chief Economist at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and an AMBN board member, remarked, "The Australia Morocco Business Network signifies a major step forward in strengthening our economic ties. By leveraging the strengths of both countries, we can open up new prospects for businesses and contribute to the prosperity of our nations." Professor Harcourt also hosts the television series "The Airport Economist" and "The Great Transformation," which reaches over 380 million online viewers worldwide.

About the Australia Morocco Business Network (AMBN)

The Australia Morocco Business Network (AMBN) is dedicated to promoting bilateral trade between Australia and Morocco. AMBN aims to facilitate economic and commercial relations, offer collaboration opportunities, and support businesses in their international expansion.

Mr. Rboub concluded, "Through targeted initiatives, strategic partnerships during organized trade missions, and comprehensive support, AMBN will enable businesses from both countries to thrive in the global marketplace and looks forward to taking the relationship between the two countries to another level."
