Morocco prepares new road safety strategy for 2026–2030
Morocco is preparing to roll out a new national road safety strategy covering the period from 2026 to 2030, as authorities seek to address a worrying rise in traffic accidents and fatalities across the country.
The roadmap was presented during a meeting of the Permanent Road Safety Committee held in Rabat, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport and Logistics. Officials highlighted that the meeting took place against a challenging backdrop, marked by a steady deterioration in road safety indicators.
Preliminary data for the first eleven months of 2025 point to a sharp increase in casualties compared with the same period in 2024. Road deaths rose by more than a quarter, exceeding 4,000 fatalities, while the number of seriously injured people also climbed significantly.
In response, the authorities see the new strategy as an opportunity to correct existing shortcomings and improve national performance in road safety. The plan builds on an evaluation of the previous 2017–2026 strategy and introduces a renewed action framework for the years ahead.
The 2026–2030 strategy is structured around several key pillars, including stronger road safety governance, safer infrastructure, improved road user behavior, enhanced vehicle safety, and better post-accident response. Clear responsibilities will be assigned to each ministry and partner institution involved.
To ensure effective implementation, the strategy will be supported by a detailed action plan with defined timelines, allocated resources, and monitoring indicators. Authorities also emphasized the importance of involving all regions of the country, allowing local and regional actors to adapt measures to their specific needs.
The success of the strategy will depend on reinforced coordination between sectors, the acceleration of priority projects, and a results-based approach to monitoring and evaluation, with the ultimate goal of saving lives and improving safety for all road users.
