Morocco Introduces First Direct Flight to Iceland, Expanding Tourism Opportunities

The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) has launched the first direct flight connecting Morocco and Iceland, operated by the low-cost airline Play Airlines. This new route, starting October 17, will offer two weekly flights between Marrakech and Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital.

This significant development marks the first direct air link between the two countries, part of a broader strategic agreement between ONMT and Play Airlines. In addition to the direct flights, the partnership will promote joint marketing campaigns targeting tourists from both Iceland and North America.

Play Airlines, with its extensive network, will strengthen Morocco’s tourism connectivity through Reykjavik, which serves as a vital hub for flights linking Scandinavia, Western Europe, and North America. The airline currently operates routes from five major North American cities: New York, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto.

ONMT emphasized Iceland as a strategic market for Morocco’s tourism industry. Earlier this year, the office organized the “Light Tour,” a promotional event in four Scandinavian capitals that attracted over 150 key players in the tourism sector. ONMT has also expanded transportation capacity to Scandinavian countries by partnering with leading European airlines to further boost tourism inflows.

This new direct flight represents a key milestone in Morocco’s efforts to diversify its tourism market and strengthen ties with new regions, enhancing the country's appeal to travelers from Iceland and North America.
