After suffering a severe crash during the eighth stage of the Vuelta, Tadej Pogacar shared a photo from the hospital, displaying a fighting spirit ahead of his surgery. The Slovenian, forced to abandon while leading the race, is set to undergo surgery on his left clavicle.
Tadej Pogacar wanted to reassure his supporters the day after his abrupt withdrawal from the Vuelta. The Slovenian rider shared a photo taken from his hospital bed on Sunday, wearing a neck brace and several bandages following his crash on Saturday.
To accompany this image, the leader of the UAE team chose a particularly symbolic reference: the song “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. A nod that reflects his morale despite the severity of his injuries.
A Crash That Ends His Vuelta
Pogacar was involved in the accident during the eighth stage of the Vuelta, about 32 kilometers from the finish. The crash occurred in Xeraco, in the province of Valencia, while the stage seemed destined for a sprint finish.
The Slovenian was in first place in the general classification and appeared to be the favorite to continue his dominance in the Vuelta. His withdrawal is therefore a significant plot twist in the race.
The stage ultimately concluded with a victory for Frenchman Bryan Coquard in the sprint.
Multiple Injuries Diagnosed
The medical report provided by his team confirmed several injuries. Pogacar is suffering from a concussion, a displaced fracture of the left clavicle, and a stable fracture of the seventh cervical vertebra, C7.
The rider also has several abrasions, visible in the photo shared from the hospital. He appears with a cervical collar, a bandage on his eyebrow, and a hand injury.
Surgery on the left clavicle is planned. While waiting for this operation, the message shared by the Slovenian is intended to reassure about his state of mind.
A Hard Blow for the Vuelta Leader
This crash comes at a time when Pogacar seemed to have a serious grip on the final victory. His premature exit thus disrupts the sporting scenario of this edition of the Vuelta and opens a new battle for the general classification.
For the Slovenian champion, the focus is now primarily medical. After such a violent crash, his priority is to recover before considering the rest of his season.
