The Atlas Lions concluded the Mediterranean Games in Taranto in spectacular fashion. The Moroccan U20 team decisively defeated the host nation Italy 4-1 on Sunday, August 30, securing the third spot on the podium.

Morocco wrapped up its campaign at the 2026 Mediterranean Games with a particularly convincing performance. Facing Italy in the bronze medal match, the Moroccan U20s left little hope for their opponents, winning 4-1 at the Iacovone Stadium in Taranto.

A Controlled First Half

The players led by Ludovic Batelli quickly took the initiative. Mohammed Mounssef opened the scoring in the 9th minute, allowing Morocco to head into halftime with a valuable lead.

The Italian team, buoyed by its status as the host nation, was unable to turn the tide after the break. On the contrary, the Moroccans accelerated and firmly took control of the match.

Three Goals in Less Than Thirty Minutes

The second half turned into a demonstration. Abdelali Eddaoudi doubled the lead in the 47th minute before Karim Essaadi scored the third goal just three minutes later.

Morocco continued to push despite this significant advantage. Anass Benomar finally added a fourth goal in the 75th minute, sealing a 4-1 victory against the host team.

This win allows the Atlas Lions to leave Taranto with a bronze medal and confirms their consistency in this competition.

A Fourth Bronze Medal for Morocco

This new accolade adds to Morocco's achievements in the men's football tournament of the Mediterranean Games. It marks the fourth bronze medal obtained by Morocco in this discipline.

The previous medals were earned in Athens in 1991, Tarragona in 2018, and Oran in 2022. The result achieved in Taranto allows Moroccan football to continue its regular presence on the Mediterranean podium.

For the U20 generation, this medal also represents an important international experience, gained after a tournament concluded with a prestigious victory against the host nation.
