Morocco integrates Spidercam technology for an innovative AFCON 2025 broadcast

Morocco's National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT) is set to revolutionize the viewing experience for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 by deploying Spidercam technology across all nine hosting stadiums. This marks a groundbreaking first in AFCON history, as the advanced aerial camera system will be implemented throughout the entire tournament.

Enhancing the viewing experience

The Spidercam system, known for its dynamic aerial perspectives, has been successfully utilized by SNRT in past events like the 2022 Club World Cup and the 2023 Morocco-Brazil friendly. Its introduction to AFCON 2025 promises an unparalleled visual experience for millions of spectators across Africa and beyond, delivering high-definition, immersive footage.

SNRT initiated the tender process on July 30, with a total budget of MAD 9,579,552 ($957,955) allocated for the project. The deadline for bid submissions is September 10. The costs will be distributed across the nine stadiums, including Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium (MAD 1,430,832), Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium (MAD 1,371,600), and Marrakech’s Grand Stadium (MAD 1,214,820).

Technical precision and safety

The Spidercam, suspended by cables anchored to four high points, operates with real-time precision. It features an HD or 4K camera equipped with motorized zoom, a gyrostabilized head, and anti-collision systems. Controlled by two operators, the system captures smooth, immersive visuals, adding depth to live broadcasts with slow-motion replays and close-up shots.

A full-scale test was conducted during the Morocco-Benin friendly match on June 9 at the Fez Stadium, validating the system’s capabilities. SNRT has ensured that all stadiums will be fully equipped and tested at least four days before the tournament's start.

A milestone for Morocco and CAF

This initiative marks the first time the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has entrusted a host nation’s national broadcaster with full match production responsibilities. Morocco's efforts to integrate cutting-edge technology align with its broader strategy to showcase its capabilities as a global sports event organizer, particularly as it prepares to co-host the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

The AFCON 2025 tournament will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, emphasizing Morocco’s commitment to innovation and excellence in sports broadcasting.
